"What do you mean it's only in 2D, what a load of crap!"
With all the hype around the upcomming Piranha 3DD movie, the sequal to Piranha 3D that will hit theaters in April 2012, I thought it might be a good idea to take a look at some of the past Piranha movie sequels that helped spawn this reincarnation of a great cheesy old horror movie.
Piranha 1978
The original Piranha movie directed by Joe Dante from the late 70s was a typical B horror film of the time. With it’s campy feel and 70s style special effects, the film has achieved somewhat of a cult classic status in it’s particular genre and it’s no wonder why it has gone on to produce a slew of sequels and remakes.
Piranha 2:The Spawning 1981
Interestingly, this sequel started off being directed by James Cameron in what is technically his directorial debut. However, since he was fired from the producer two weeks into filming, Cameron tends not to consider this his first film. Regardless, the film turned out to be cheesier than the first and doesn’t hold up well against the original story. Part 2 gives the new piranhas the ability to fly and thus the ability to create even more carnage both in the water and in the air.
Piranha 1995
A made for TV remake of the original, still cheesy, yet includes Soliel Moon Fry in one of her few non-Punky Brewster roles.
Piranha 2007
The remade version was a made for TV movie that ended up using stock footage from the original 1978 version.
Mega Piranha 2010
Yet another made for TV flick, this version features piranhas of mega proportions, so big that they can fight a battleship. Not to mention it also stars former 80s pop-star Tiffany. I’m not sure this flick could even be considered part of the franchise but it’s probably worth a mention.
Piranha 3D 2010
This fun filled and entertaining 3D remake features a cameo by Richard Dreyfuss who starts the movie wearing the same clothes from his Matt Hooper character in Jaws. With tons of gore, sexploitation (including real life porn stars) and all the cheese a B horror movie fan could ever want.
Piranha 3DD 2012
Twice the teeth. Twice the terror.
In the latest follow up to the Piranha 3D film series, 3D 2 finds our ferocious batch of hungry fish making their way upstream from Lake Victoria and somehow managing to find their way into the Big Wet water park, which seems a bit of stretch to me but who are we kidding, this whole franchise has B horror movie written all over it anyways.
In addition, we have several return appearances from the Piranha 3D cast including: Christopher Lloyd as the crazy scientist dude and Ving Rhames who appears to have survived the first movie having only lost his legs which now include prosthetic weapons similar to that chick in Planet Terror. Even better, we have some new ridiculous cast members including Gary Busey and The Hoff himself playing what else, a life guard.
Like the other crazy movies that preceded this, it promises to be a fun wacky ride which adds twice the blood and as the DD in 3DD implies, twice the boobs.
